The Kelpies - the Water Horses
We saw the planning diagram for the new Helix canal project near Falkirk. The artist's impression showed huge horse's head sculptures that would tower over the canal and nearby motorway. But when we found these waiting by the Falkirk Wheel we assumed the artist had got a little enthusiastic and just a tad out of touch with reality. Little did we know that these were the 1/10 scale design models and that the full size 30 metre tall heads are already being manufactured elsewhere.
When there is a double dip recession and millions are out of work and struggling to make ends meet with the rising cost of living, is it right that hard-earned tax payer's (probably English) money is handed out in grants and squandered on non-essential projects so that a couple of artists can have enough money to play around for a few more years?
