    Nesting in a hollow tree.. the nest had just been destroyed.

      I've made the same mistake in the past, but this is actually a queen of the social wasp Dolichovespula media (Hornet would also be unusual in urban London)

      Checkout the long antenna and abdomen - male Vespa crabro (hornet). The markings on these are often slightly darker, and the bright lighting probably makes it contrast even more.
