The Road Scholars' first stop on Wednesday was Penn State's Electro-Optics Center, a research facility in Freeport that works with faculty across several disciplines to develop more efficient, cutting-edge advances in areas such as laser development and application, materials design and process technology, fiber optics, photonics and sensor technology. In the 10 years the center has been in operation, it has saved its U.S. government clients nearly $1 billion in production costs. It also operates outreach efforts to educate area youth about career options in science, engineering and technology.
