Hijinks with the Sphinx Celebration
On October 19, 2013, the Penn Museum celebrated the 100th anniversary of the arrival of its colossal granite Sphinx of Ramesses II, the largest ancient Egyptian sphinx in the Western Hemisphere. Guests enjoyed celebratory cupcakes as well as an array of activities including a Hieroglyph workshop, a coloring table, and a True/False trivia game about sphinxes. The event also featured talks by Penn Museum Egyptologists Dr. David Silverman and Dr. Josef Wegner, as well as a lecture by author John M. Adams, sponsored by the American Research Center in Egypt—Pennsylvania Chapter. As the celebration landed on National Archaeology Day, the Museum also offered other fun, non-Egyptian related activities including a Roman hairstyles workshop, an artifact cart, and an Indiana Jones-style obstacle course.
