チャグチャグ馬コ (Chagu-chagu Umako/ Makko Festival) 1

    Newer Older

Today we had the チャグチャグ馬コ (Chagu-chagu makko/umako festival) in which about 100 horses paraded about 15 km from 鬼越蒼前神社 (Onikoshi Souzen shrine) in 滝沢村 (Takizawa village) to 盛岡八幡宮 (Morioka Hachiman shrine) in 盛岡市 (Morioka city) wearing costumes with small bells. 'チャグチャグ(chagu-chagu)' describes the sounds of bells. This festival originated that farmers gave horses a rest from the hard labor of planting rice and offered prayers to God hoping horses would be healthy.

Wonderful festival. That is quite a decoration on the horse.

And information about the bells: This simple yet pleasant sound has been selected by the Ministry of the Environment as one of "the 100 best sonic scenes of Japan to be preserved into the future." From the Japanese national Tourist Organization web site.

I like this so much, you know how much I like cultural expressions, specially the Oriental cultures. Beautiful display and it shows that farmers do have heart for their animals!
I've seen similar manifestations in India where they paint and dress up the elephants, also in Peru where they do the same with Llama's.
I guess all cultures must have the same ancesters somewhere;-)
      Thanks for sharing this!

      Thank you Serena :-)
      Peter, it's very interesting!
Those who work with their animal-family may think them precious.
In fact, in Iwate, there were very old traditional houses in which people and horses lived together to take care of the horses.
The house is called '南部曲がり屋 (nanbu-magariya)' shaped 'L'.
We can see the houses which are preserved in some spots.
