Marsden cross memorial reserve

7.12.2014: Commemorating the inauguration of the CMS mission in New Zealand (the first Christian mission) on 25 December 1814, Oihi, Bay of Islands.

This was also the site of the first organised European settlement in New Zealand. The land was gifted to the mission by Rutara, a rangatira from the adjacent pā of Rangihoua. Ruatara had tried to visit London, but was not allowed off the ship. He formed a friendship with Samuel Marsden, chaplain to the penal colony in Sydney on the return from London. Ruatara's assurance of protection made it possible for the first missionary families to settle here in 1814.
