A New Visitor

I've never seen a Varied Thrush at this time of year, never mind seeing one on our back deck. I've heard their distinct song here and there for a few weeks now, and spotted my first one in a snow storm. My Flickr friend Garnite (Jim) says that they're a sign that we're in for a lot of snow. Well, he's sure right...we've had more snow here than I can remember since I moved to British Columbia over 30 years ago.

Here's what his song sounds like.

Update: We had an interesting day...drove down the coast through a snowstorm that appeared off and on. There are lots of cars in the ditch, and even cars parked on the highway putting on chains. Our power was out when we got back and just came back on. More snow expected all week! Apparently the thrush knows what it's doing when it comes to forecasting snow.
