Education is the largest area of assistance requested by Peace Corps’ host countries. Volunteers teach conversational English, English as a foreign language, or content-based English at the middle, high school, and university levels. At the primary and secondary levels, Volunteers provide training and support to teachers, co-teach, or offer direct instruction to students.

Volunteers introduce innovative teaching methodologies, encourage critical thinking in the classroom, and integrate content such as health education and environmental awareness into English, math, science, and other subjects. Many also work in curriculum or materials development and train teachers informally in conversational English, academic subjects, or methodology. Some projects focus specifically on basic health and HIV/AIDS education, the environment, childhood development, English as a second language (ESL), remedial education, or science.
