Barklouse

Newer Older

Found this barklouse on some leaf litter, along with a short-winged individual (female?) to be posted later. This one is a male. Body length is 3mm, length to wing tips about 5 mm.

    Good call, Modo Frodo. You have, as far as I can tell, exactly the same species--it must be common in our area. I spent some time looking through BugGuide images, and have finally learned a little about these things. There should be several other species around--this was my first ever. I'm sure I've been missing them, as they are tiny, and starting to escape my aging eyes.

    Small indeed, but you've really captured yours gloriously. I can't believe how shiny they are. They look so mechanical too... I've read that the military is working on insect sized, remote controlled spy planes for surveillance/ reconnaissance work. This creature seems like it could do the job. I'm going to be on the lookout for these in the spring and summer again. Right now I'm getting nothing at the lights. Zip.
