Turning beer bottles into beer glasses
My project for the last 2 weekends has been turning beer bottles with screen-printed, unremovable labels into nice looking drinking glasses.
Many thanks to Marcela for getting me this glass bottle cutting kit.
The kit is used to etch a scored line around the bottle where you want it to break.
I also found this video online that shows how easy and gentle it can be to snap off just with boiling water instead of hammering (which is likely to cause extra fracturing) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFXngPx3w3M
In this photo, half of the bottles have been sanded and half are immediately post-break. Some didn't break as cleanly as others (the Chouffe one most noticeably here) - that's partly because it's hard to get the score line perfectly flat around the bottle, but also because even the relatively gentle water breaking method has a chance of going badly.
