Presbyterium of San Vitale
The gorgeous apse of San Vitale in Ravenna surmounts the presbyterium where the bishop and his presbyters (priests) sat during Mass. The episcopal Chair is directly under the figure of Christ who is seated in Majesty over the Cosmos. The three windows above the Cathedra suggest the Holy Trinity whose light pours into the Church. Looking onto this ecclesiastical scene is the Emperor and the Empress with their retinues, but the secular imperium is subject to the reign of Christ who is above all.
