Tom Quad

A familiar sight thanks to recent movies like 'The History Boys' and 'The Golden Compass', the Great Quad of Christ Church College is also known as 'Tom Quad' after the great bell in the tower built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1681-2. The Quad itself was to have been a great covered cloister, begun by Cardinal Wolsey but it was never completed. It is the largest college quad in Oxford, measuring 264 by 261 feet.
