Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well
This window, c.1863 by Pugin in Bolton Priory church depicts the scene of today's Gospel for the Third Sunday of Lent in which Jesus catechizes a Samaritan woman at the well.
This Gospel is read during Lent because it is a time when those who are to be baptised at Easter are prepared by prayer and teaching.
Like the Samaritan woman, the catechumen has encountered Jesus, and they thirst for living water which he alone can give, i.e. eternal life and happiness in God's presence for ever.
