Teaching God's Design for Breasts (pastel)
This self-portrait of teaching skin-to-skin nursing is meant to SHOCK and to HEAL. It shows a normal, non-sexual activity in my job that stands in stark contrast to our society's exploitative view of women's breasts. That many women themselves see and treat their breasts as sexualized objects indicates the degree to which this abusive perception of women's bodies controls our cultural thinking. As a male RN who teaches breastfeeding routinely, I have the pleasant and liberating privilege of witnessing and participating in the reality of God's intentional design for women's breasts. For a small window of time during their hospital stay, I watch mothers also experience that freedom, hoping they keep it when they leave.
As the viewer of this artwork, you also have a choice to make. You can stay SHOCKED by stubbornly maintaining the obscene, indecent and pornographic view of women's breasts created artificially by our culture, OR you can let divine reality HEAL and set you free by choosing God's view, based on the truth. For sanity's sake, please, join me in seeing breasts wholesomely, as normal parts of the female anatomy and as beautiful organs which God carefully designed with the characteristic potential of nurturing babies. -- DLH
