Alpenkorps Jäger Regiment Nr. 3 - Schneeschuhbataillon
Studio portrait of a Bavarian Schneeschuh Battalion Jaeger in the Königliche Bayerische Jäger Regiment Nr. 3, 2nd Royal Bavarian Jaeger Brigade (commanded by Colonel Ernest von Below), a key unit of das Deutsche Alpenkorps.
The picture was made by Hans Hipp, Immenstadt (Allgaü). The mountain backdrop is probably well known to other collectors as many portraits were bade by the Photograph. Atelier.
This man in his full gear is a nice example to illustrate the standard Bavarian SS Litewka (fatigue tunic).
He is wearing cleathed boots and puttees (gamashen) in which a Trench knife is tucked. This is a special type with narrow woven top straps and black metal buckle and hook. Later a special heavier mountain boot would be issued.
Slung around his shoulder is a Gew98 with a flower tucked in it, more can be seen on his tunic and helmet. The leather Tschako with feldzeichen is covered with the Überzug marked 3 (for the 3th Jäg. Reg.). On his belt are M1895 ammo pouches and a bayonet with troddel. In his hand is a walking stick.
