Meerendal Manor House
I arrived at the Meerendal Wine Estate (the start of the 2012 Cape Epic Mountain Bike Race) at least half an hour before the first riders set off yesterday morning.
I decided to use the time and the opportunity to photograph the historic manor house… which was looking particularly beautiful in the soft dawn light. Built in 1702… the Meerendal Manor House is one of the oldest (and most beautiful (in my opinion)) buildings in my home town of Durbanville. Meerendal was also one of the first wine estates that planted the Pinotage cultivar (in 1955)… a very successful variety that was developed by Professor Perold at the University of Stellenbosch in 1925.
Another point of interest is that this house was the home of one of my first ever girlfriends (in the early 1970s (before I started drinking wine))!! LOL!!!
