Zanzibar Beach Bicycle (Vertorama)
Location: Somewhere along the south-eastern coast of Zanzibar.
Description: I was quite surprised to see that the quality of the road infrastructure in Zanzibar is generally pretty high. Most of the major villages are serviced by tarmac roads, which are largely without potholes.
I was also quite surprised however, to notice that there is a clear “pecking order” for the traffic on these roads! The truck is king and everybody gets out of its way… then comes the Daladalas (mini-truck taxis)… followed by the minibuses… followed by the cars… followed by the scooters… followed by the bicycles… followed by pedestrians... who are finally followed by chickens, ducks and all other kinds of livestock! The right of way is only yours if you’re higher up in this pecking order, if you’re on a bicycle… you’d better get off the road when you see someone approaching you!
That is why many bicycle riders prefer riding along the beach! :)
