MonumenTaal (Vertorama)

Location: Inside the Taal Monument near Paarl

Description: Several of my Cape Town Flickr contacts have already posted some excellent photographs of the inside of the Afrikaans language monument in Paarl.

So, yesterday afternoon I decided to check out the place for myself, and see if I could find any good compositions and angles to shoot a Vertorama in there. Unfortunately I got there a few minutes before closing time, and the very serious looking guy at the gate said they closed at five sharp (with all the emphasis on the word sharp)!! So, I only had about five minutes to run inside, crawl down into the far corner, set my Nikon to ISO 3200 (it was dark and I was going to have to shoot this thing hand-held)… and hope for the best.

While the results aren’t exactly pin-sharp or noise-free, I’m completely blown away by the abilities of this D300! It took three images at 10mm to capture the whole inside of the place (from horizontal to vertical), but it took lots of bending and twisting in Photoshop before I was able to make everything fit together! I’m not crazy about the results, but I’m quite prepared to write this one off as a learning experience.
