Reflections in Sixty Lake Basin

    Newer Older

    Large on black

Another shot from Sixty Lake Basin, just 2 miles from Rae Lakes. Man, what a great place. Fortunately, fewer people go there as most are timebound on the, excellent, Rae Lakes loop. We only spent one night there but had sixty lakes practically to ourselves. We stopped at this lake when we arrived to filter water for dinner. I asked Maria to stop pumping water for the great reflection. We were both going somewhat slowly feeling the altitude and a long days hiking.

Mt Clarence King, in the distance, is a challenge to climb so we read. You can also see the makings of the clouds we enjoyed over dinner.

Handheld HDR from 3 shots in Photomatix.
(I wonder, by changing the polarizer between shots for an HDR, if it would be possible to both see through the water and the reflection. Any thoughts?)

nice shot. the colors came out very well. the halo isnt a problem for me but if you were going for photo realistic, that was the give away its an hdr. otherwise i would have just thought you used a polarizer.

would you have the polarizer on for 1, 2 or 3 of the shots? i think for this shot, the reflection trumps any benefit of being able to see through water. and you can already see through the water and the reflection (the reflection of the trees on the right). it would be interesting though.

Edit: I should have looked through your other photos to begin with.

Terrific photos! Very inspirational! I am going on a 5-day backpacking trip to Rae Lakes in the end of July!

Did you use polarizer here? Thank you!

    16. Jonohey 46 months ago | reply

Hi @Elena, Sounds like you're clearly going to have an amazing time on your trip. Don't forget to get to Kearsarge if you have the legs for it. And, yes, I did use a polarizer to balance between a blue sky and seeing through the crystal clear water.

@_N.A.B. Thanks for the comment a long time ago about the halo. I had to check the original shots as depending on the sun location polarizers can have a diagonal darkening in the sky like this one. In this case you are right, it's a combination of polarizer and halo. I was just learning, now I would have removed more of the lightening to get a little closer to what the camer saw directly. I left the polarizer in the same place for all of the shots - not least because, doing this handheld with a D60, you have to twiddle the exposure dial between shots and keeping it still is most important. But also, I think changing the polarizer between shots could lead to some strange effects as the software tries to superimpose the shots. I'm willing to give it a try though =)

@ everyone - thanks for all the kind comments. It's very motivating =)
