My dad in 1925 "Charlie my boy and his dog Brownie".......

My father Charles Caplan was born in 1911 in Norfolk, Virginia. A true southener who claims the north cheated and our history books were full of lies. My dad was the second youngest out of 5 children. He was a southern gentleman but had racist ways that we made him overcome and tried to change. He was raised with the separate water fountains and segregation. Moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was a rude awakening for him but with my mother's more modern and liberal ways he calmed down and became more tolerant and handled diversity a lot better.

This is his beloved dog Brownie I always heard about. His mom had a way of calling the children in from outdoors. She would say, Annie, Lottie, Charlie, Louis , Joey , Brownie come in the house!!! His mom was from Manheim, Germany and his dad,a tailor from Russia. Supposedly he fell in love with my grandmother as she was scrubbing the front door steps and was bending over ...that's how my dad told the story. lol

He died way too young at age 54 in 1966. I still see him through the eyes of a twelve year old child; my thoughts frozen in time...

The license plate says Norfolk, Virginia 1925. It came out reversed in my photo of it.
