1205_0351 Vesper Sparrow

    Newer Older

Yesterday morning I took a very early drive along some back roads near my home in southwestern Saskatchewan, looking for songbirds. Nine of ten will fly off the fence post at the approach of a vehicle. Then there's the tenth...

As Trevor Herriot points out in his wonderful book Grass, Sky, Song, it's difficult to get people to care about nondescript little brown grassland birds. They will not attract busloads of tourists. To lovers of wild prairie, though, they are one of the essential ingredients of these intensely beautiful and increasingly rare ecosystems, their song and their presence a good indication of biodiversity persisting in the face of the immense forces of industrial agriculture. Essential like the sky, like the clouds, like the wind.

Thank you for posting this. Was having trouble identifying a sparrow I had photographed but this picture clinches it as a Vesper Sparrow. Much better detail then anything in my bird books.

      Really moved by your description.
I am a lover of grasslands and prairie an anytime I can take a trip by myself into this landscape it moves me. To be alone with the wind and the songs of the birds is an intensely wonderful experience.

Nice to see this make Explore.

      I love sparrows :)
they are the majority of birds we have here in the city and as you say they are nondescript little tan and gray city birds... but they are so full of action and so fun to watch when you take the time

Thanks for adding your amazing photo to **E-Ticket** Invited-Only Photos.
