0903_0298 Glaucous-winged Gull
End of winter, I took a walk by Esquimalt Lagoon on a frosty morning. It was to be the last hard frost of the year, although I did not know that. When the sun climbed over the horizon, the light was a sudden outpouring of the sublime, and I knew whatever I aimed my camera at was going to look incredible. Because there was nothing exotic around that day, I settled for the gulls that were scavenging clams along the shore, flying up to hover and drop them onto rocks. This gull has just retrieved its prize. The light, the pose, the background water of the lagoon... everything just coalesced into this fleeting view. And then it flapped off.
