The Impassioned Eye (One thing you can do to improve your photography in 2009)

My ten suggestions for improving your photograpghy yesterday left out perhaps the most important suggestion, one that is key even for the most advanced artists--Learn to See.

Seeing is a photographer's most important skill. Regardless of content or style, it's nothing if not build upon a foundation of a vision of the moment.

If you have the opportunity please see the documentary "Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Impassioned Eye". His work moves me as much as any other.

"The simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression... . In photography, the smallest thing can be a great subject. The little human detail can become a leitmotif." — Henri Cartier-Bresson
