mother of marketing
Venice, Italy, 2018. The winged lion is the symbol of St. Mark. Around 826 AD merchants from Venice stole the alleged skeleton of St. Mark from Alexandria thus giving the thriving Republic a „new a powerful holy patron“. From my point of view this was the mother of all marketing campaigns. Venice had a mighty patron with a catchy symbol, trying to add a holy cause to their striving of being the foremost trading power in the Mediterranean. That strategy worked out nearly 1000 years!
