San Gimignano, Tuscanny, Italy, 2016
In the 14 th century, a trade route went through San Gimignano. The town was rich, over 70 turrets were build and laws were passed regarding excessive wealth. Next came very bloody struggles for power, a lost war, the plague and the trade route shifted elsewere. In 1563, the ruling Archduke of Florence decided, that no money whatsoever would be invested in San Gimignano anymore. Therefore, this town was frozen in the middle ages and still looks very much like it today.
