pencil on paper.
I've now produced something like 80 large (A2 ish) sized pencil/graphite works drawn direct from landscape. Commonly they are drawn from the car or near to my parked car beside a road or track. The track often forms the dynamic perspective of the composition. Last year I filled a number of sketchbooks up with these places, now I'm drawing large from observation, but no doubt informed to some extent by memory of my previous drawing. I guess the big Hockney show of 2012 was a huge inspiration to work in this way, although truth be told since my rather dark landscape series of 2007-9 I had been thinking about a serious return to landscape painting, moving beyond things I regularly photographed. These landscapes had to be rooted in places I was familiar with, so clearly for me Oxfordshire was going to be a big part of that. Next year I have a show, I hope it will be a good chance to exhibit all new work. Like all my work, whether photographic, painted or drawn I like these to be looked on as a series that features interrelated concerns and connections.
