Gaza Gaza floods after thunderstorm Alexa
Palestinians look on at the flooding of an entire neighborhoods in Al Sheikh Radwan, Gaza Strip, one of the areas to be worst hit by thunderstorm Alexa.
Thousands of Palestinian families were displaced by the storm, houses collapsed, and farmers lost thousands of livestock.
Several water storm lagoons and pumping stations across Gaza city have overflowed, flooding extensive residential areas in rainwater mixed with sewage.
The floods come on top of an already crippling blockade of the Gaza Strip that has forced the 1.7 million Palestinians into poverty. With the Palestinians' purchasing power having gone down under years of the blockade the available fuel in the strip is too expensive for families, businesses and local authorities in normal times, let alone in times of crises where demand is even sharper. Gaza's infrastructure could not cope with the demand of sewage pumping stations that were already running at reduced capacity.
Oxfam distributed blankets, mattresses and hygiene kits to some of the worst affected families.
