Can Ethiopia’s infrastructure keep up with the pace of development?

Ethiopia’s population is forecast to reach 120 million by 2025; its economy has been growing at an average annual GDP growth rate of almost 11% for the last decade. But a booming population and increasing demands on water from the agricultural, industrial and energy sectors will also increase pressure on Ethiopia’s water resources.

In this picture, two students return from school in a central neighbourhood of Addis Ababa. Ethiopia’s capital, like other Ethiopian urban centres, is already facing a water emergency. Only three reservoirs serve its 4 million inhabitants. The city experiences a 40% water deficit and some neighbouring towns receive water only one day a week. It is not clear whether the government will have the resources and infrastructure needed to fuel its development ambitions while providing services to everyone.
