Wear a Mask!
Donald Trump has made mask wearing during the pandemic a political issue. He downplayed the efficacy of wearing one and chastised both journalists and Joe Biden for doing so. In his recent 60 Minutes interview with Lesley Stahl, Stahl said to the president, “I wonder if you think that masks don’t work.” He first replied, “I feel masks possibly work,” then two sentences later he said, “But I would say a mask works. And I have nothing against masks. And I tell people to wear masks.” This is Trump’s usual modus operandi: he’ll sow doubt, then double back to go on record with a more palatable response. If he’s called out on his initial response, he can always fall back on his second statement. He’ll often preface an outlandish theory with “People say…” to avoid responsibility for his own words.
Trump claims his campaign hands out masks at rallies and that, according to CNN’s Daniel Dale, is true. He also claimed that in two recent rallies all the people behind him were wearing masks. Not totally true, and Dale noted that people standing behind Trump wear masks at a higher rate than those in the crowd. To Donald optics is everything. Public safety is not.
More important, President Trump has a long and consistent history of downplaying the COVID crisis despite admitting the virus is serious. When he left Walter Reed Medical Center after his stay for COVID treatment he tweeted, “Don’t be afraid of COVID. Don’t let it dominate your life.” Recently, he repeated his prediction that the virus would “magically disappear.” Stahl reminded him that cases of the virus are rising at an enormous rate. But he kept insisting that “we are turning the corner” and contends that his administration has got everything under control.
Yet, the facts don’t support that. Mark Meadows, his chief of staff, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on State of the Union, “We are not going to control the pandemic. We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics and other mitigation areas.” In other words, Trump’s administration will do nothing to reduce the outbreak. They have ceded their responsibility to protect Americans. They are only go to focus on treating those who get the disease. He said this just as news outlets reported that five of Vice President Pence’s staff tested positive for the virus (something the White House tried to hide).
A study recently reported that over 100,000 American lives could be saved if everyone started wearing masks. We already know catching COVID affects people in different ways. It doesn’t matter your age. Healthy people can get very sick and even die. So why shouldn’t we take simple precautions like wearing our masks? And why hasn’t President Trump made this the foundation of the fight to end this pandemic?
Trump has blinders on. He wants to appeal to his base, many of whom think this is a hoax. And many of them will contract COVID and infect others leading to the needless deaths of thousands. What an unconscionable waste.
Don't be like Donald. Wear a fu*king mask over your nose and mouth, not your eyes!
