The Practical Encyclopedia of Good Decorating and Home Improvement
The Practical Encyclopedia of Good Decorating and Home Improvement, 1970

This many-volumed encyclopedia is an amazing compendium of mod decor and apocalyptic design disasters all mixed together. What's really appealing about it is its advocacy for wild experiment and its embrace of a DIY ethic and aesthetic, even while it also shows high design. The distinction between high and low really isn't there, and some of the mixes are effortless. The design is much more outward-looking than design currently seems, much more expansive and much less stuff and bogged down in traditions that were never all that exciting in the first place. These interiors were meant to excite, to draw you in, to be talked about, and to take you away from mundane and genteel behaviours. The only other collection of interiors that has excited me this much was Nest Magazine, RIP.
