First glimpse of the church during the open house

First view of the building, summer 2002. With the doors open on an uncharacteristically hot and sunny summer day in Vancouver, the extent of the smell and the damp was not evident. So I made an offer. Not subject to inspection. I was in competition with a developer who wanted to knock it down, so I didn't have much choice. Neither the owner, nor the neighbours, nor I, wanted the building to be knocked down, because there are so few buildings like this in Vancouver and it had played an important part in Vancouver's early history. I couldn't raise my offer, but I did make it clear I wasn't going to knock it down, plus my offer had no subject clauses on it, but even so I'm still amazed I won out. And still a bit horrified.
