Last week I posted my most popular photo ever (not in number of views but in number of favorites). That was a photo of a ring placed on a bible, and it's shadow created a heart. Yes, a cliché but a beautiful cliché at that.

I guess the fact that the ring was placed on a Bible made a few people think I'm rather conservative. But I believe that we in 2009 should accept the fact that love comes in all shapes and sizes, and that we within reason we should accept most of them.

So I decided to revisit my marriage photo and photograph and photograph a golden heart this time. With a twist: As you can see the golden heart casts three shadows this time. You could be two of the same kind, so to speak, and it would still be love in my book. You could be three of a kind and it would still be love. Etc.

So here's a photo to those of you that wants to celebrate love in whatever form it comes. Therefore this photo is what i call commentware: Take this photo and use it for whatever purpose you want, but leave a comment here if you *do* use it. That's all I ask :-) (The only reason I marked this photo as a Creative Commons Licenced photo is that I don't have the option waive any rights)

Anyway: Here's some technical details if you should be interested.

Two flashes placed behind the motive, approx 1,5 meters behind. They light the heart from two angles, so that I got two shadows. Manual exposure 1/200 f/11, flashed set to TTL, no exposure compensation. The left flash (which lights the right part of the photo) covered with a 1/2 CTO gel. That's why the right page has a sunset-y glow, while the left page don't. The third shadow behind the gold heart comes from the on-camera flash.

You're getting good at these :) Is the number 13 there by accident?

    2. jcoterhals 116 months ago | reply

nerdegutt: No. The number 13 is there conciously. As was the case the last time, the book open here is still Paul's letter to the Corinthians, chapter 13. You know: The one about love.

Hi! I'd like to use this image as the main for an article about to be posted on, a website for poly-identified folks (people who practice polyamory, ethical non-monogamy) about risk vs reward, entitled the "Golden Third." Amazingly, when I searched those words exactly on the creative commons side of flickr, your image cameup and it fits perfectly.

I'll attribute you, so hopefully your work will recieve more attention, and please email me at if you have any issues or questions.

Thanks for the Photo! I am a pastor and am preparing a relationship series titled "Hearts on Fire" where we will be addressing The Power of Love and how to apply it to the relationships in our lives. We will learn about loneliness, marriage, temptation, dating, and ultimately finding forgiveness when we don't get some of those things right. God's Word equips us with the tools we need to have the power of love in all aspects of our lives--like any tool we need to learn how to use it! Thanks again; your photo will help the visual learners make a connection between love and scripture!

Thank you for this photo. I'm using it in a blog post for our little ministry, Empower International. We teach egalitarian marriage to families in the U.S., Africa, India and Haiti. Here's a link to the post. Thanks for making this available.
