Y Ravine/Leiling Stollen

Unspeakable place. A German strong point, hard fought over later in the battle of the Somme, as the troops climbed forward over the debris strewn fields, This area was a warren of German dugouts, tunnels and strongpoints. It was taken at cost.

The area is sectioned off, with large red signs indicating it would be more than a bit daft to enter as the level of unexploded ordinance in this area is so high. The sheep hadn't realised, they probably serve to keep the grass down, and seem to survive.

The British and Newfoundland troops would have advanced from the right down the hill towards this, The 119th infantry brigade tore them up with machine guns, many didn't make it, ghastly place even now.
