Floodplains - Öræfajökull, Iceland

South of Öræfajökull there are large glacier floodplains created by endless sediment deposits from the many glacier rivers in the area. Parts of these floodplains get covered in thin layer of water. Knowing this I drove the 4 hours from Reykjavík to the area. My friend Einar from knows this area well helped me find and access this spot safely. All to many people have gotten their cars stuck in quicksand here so local advice was essential.

What I did not know is that the area only gets flooded after rain (its not the rivers that flood it but rain) but I was lucky enough that it had rained heavily for the first time in weeks just before I got there.
