The First day of Eyjafjallajökull Eruption

    Newer Older

Just before midnight on Saturday 20th of March the glaciated volcano of Eyjafjallajökull erupted. The eruption is on the popular hiking route over Fimmvörðuháls and luckily it is where the glacier is very thin so no destructive flash floods came rushing down the mountain side.

When I arrived at the scene around dinner time yesterday the weather was really foul, heavy rain and wind with no mountains visible. I decided to drive further into the mountains to see if things would get better. Then it started to clear up as the sun went down.It was an awesome sight. I have never really seen a erupting volcano before.

I am restless now wanting to go again and this time closer. To get closer I will need to bigger 4x4 than my Suzuki. Getting to those mountain ridges near the volcano would render the most awesome shots.

This shot is taken from Syðra Fjallabaksleið which is a mountain road leading into Fjallabak. This road is now closed to all traffic as rivers from the volcano have started to swell.

overatli: I agree, Þórsmörk would be best, but its hard to reach in this time of the year even without an eruption.
I read a comment from the wardens, that they went into the mountains yesterday, and I would have accompanied them :-)
And I am not sure, if everybody is allowed to fly into this area, since the flight space is closed.
Thanks for the hints, lets see, when I have some time.

Great shot! It was an amazing view from there. Too bad the northern lights were too pale and in the wrong direction for a photo. Anyway, we must have crossed paths with your car out there on the tracks. We went a bit further than Tröllagjá and met a few cars out there. I was also in Fljótshlíð earlier during the day but didn't see much then.

Hope to be able to go back there soon.

Arild: Yes it is my dream shot aswell. Tomorrow and Saturday predicts clear skies, active Aurora and continued eruption. So this is the day to shoot out there.

It will be tricky though. The brightness of the lava is like city lights so containing it in a single frame will be difficult.
