Bantha-II cargo skiff

Newer Older

Today when i found the new Desert Skiff 9496 and Jabba´s Palace 9516 at Toys´r´ Us i had the final parts to finish this STAR WARS: Return of the Jedi diorama with the famous Desert Skiff.
Truly inspired by the Kenner toy from the 80s with all the dark tan this really shows a good potential for a collectible i propably have to keep for a while ;)

I hope someone from the company looks at this and make some brainstorm for the future. Its not to difficult to make good looking movie sets.

Creative interpretation of a fairly common subject. The positioning of the curved wedges at the bow and stern obviously deserve praise, but the droid arms are what stand out to me. Though I suspect they aren’t an uncommon solution, they represent the railing much more convincingly than the prefab rails of old. That bit of chain you’ve draped across the deck is one of those little details that complete the creation. Very nice work overall.

My only suggestion at the moment would be to revisit the steering vane, which appears to be positioned a bit too far back and feels rather splayed. Your use of pieces for the crescent-shaped structures making up the vane also makes them somewhat thin, and I’m curious as to whether a more traditional approach (such as Reto’s) would be more effective there.

And of course, going by the height of the rail relative to the minifigure I’m inclined to say that this creation is a bit larger than minifigure scale – not that it’s a problem. : )

It looks like Forbidden Planet have got confused and are actually using this as the photo for the official 9496 Desert Skiff set, which is a shame as I'd much rather buy this over the actual one that's being released.
