Spelunking in an abandoned mine
The last stop along the cable railway at Stravolagada is an emery mine, now abandoned on eastern Naxos. The shafts run up to a depth of about 500 m into Mt. Zas, opening onto galleries at various extraction sites along the way. Emery ore was collected in buckets on rail carts, which were wheeled out the shaft along the tracks. Once outside, the buckets were transferred to the "sky train" cable network.
