Invasive quagga mussels encrust the underside of a recreational boat in Arizona. Boaters have been blamed for inadvertently spreading the mussels across the country, where they take hold and infest waterways, fouling water treatment facilities, intakes and nuclear power plants. Resource managers are struggling to develop ways to limit or contain the spread of such invasives when they arrive in the West. Photo by Sam Chan, Oregon Sea Grant
