Santa Cruz Island Oct 20-24, 2011
I took these pictures during a 4-day trip to Santa Cruz Island as part of a group of docents from Stanford University's Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve.

A boat from Ventura dropped us off at Prisoner's Harbor. We stayed at the U.C. Santa Barbara Field Station and went on two day trips. The first was a strenuous hike to Coches Prietos cove, on the south side of the island. The second was a ride in the open backs of four-wheel drive trucks along the ridge road to a beach at the western tip of the island.

I was amazed at all the different species we were able to see in our short time there, including many endemic species that are only found on the Channel Islands. The book, Natural History of the Islands of California, by Schoenherr, Feldmeth and Emerson, is an excellent reference which describes these species in detail.
