What the....?

The Canadian Tiger Swallowtail Caterpillar which will eventually turn into one of the most beautiful of butterflies, the Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly. The eyespots are meant to ward off predators. It also has a fork tongue inside that mouth that releases an offensive odour also meant to keep the enemies at bay.

Wow! Great macro. I must be a predator-type, because I'm kinda chicken of this fella!

One of the most bizarre bugs I have ever seen. Finding out they are "common" to this part of Ontario was also a surprise as it's the first time I've ever come across one.

At first when I saw it I thought my son was kidding me and had made a sock puppet or something! Kind of reminds me a bit of "Barney".

It's a Canadian Tiger Swallow Caterpiller. It turns into one huge butterfly. When the kids first showed it to me I told them to get the heck away from it!! Didn't notice an odour but the pic sure gets alot of attention when I bring it out!!

Whoah! I seriously thought the two pics (as thumbnails) were of a rubber toy. That would definitely throw any predator off!

I found one of these here in northern Westchester County NY near Indian Point and took it to my science teacher thinking it was some kind of mutant worm (since I found him near the power plant). I was disspointed to find out I was not going to win the nobel prize and these things are common in Cananda but what the hell was it doing in NY. The one I found was green.
