Bob Weir, Rock God & Mountain Biker - a portrait
As someone who rides 10 miles to work across Birmingham's mean streets an old clunker (mountain bike) with a rigid steel frame and knobbly tyres every day I got just a little bit excited when I heard that mountain bikes were invented by a bunch of hippies in the hills outside of San Francisco and that Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead was a part of that movement.
Of course this creates a certain dilemma. Should I be thrilled that one of the Rock Gods of my youth was part of the movement that created the mountain bike or should I be distraught that one of the frontmen of the premier Acid Rock band was out getting exercise when he should have been doing drugs with the rest of the band?
Anyways, this image is a tribute to Bob Weir as a cyclist and a rock star. Obviously this is a visual pun on him being in the Dead, but I was surprised at just how good a likeness started to appear when I drew his hair on to the skeleton.
