This week in June 1854, Company G, 3rd US Infantry was part of an expedition sent against the Jicarilla Apaches in the New Mexico Territory. The Apaches were raiding settlements and caravans on the Santa Fe Trail. Infantrymen of the 3rd participated in the campaign from April 6 to June 15. The Old Guardsmen deployed from Ft. Defiance, New Mexico, with troopers of the 1st US Dragoons and were guided by legendary frontiersman “Kit” Carson. The Indians were tenaciously pursued and several sharp skirmishes ensued. By the autumn of 1854, the war was over. Participating in the expedition was First Lieutenant George Sykes of the 3rd Infantry. A company commander in the Regiment in 1861, during the Civil War he commanded the Brigade of Regulars at 1st Bull Run and later the V Corps, Army of the Potomac.
