MARK TWAIN -- A Long Lost Photo ?

Realizing that I've just hit my 3000th photo post, I'm interrupting this photostream to add what might be a "new" photo of MARK TWAIN to the vast image bank of his portraits already found by GOOGLE and YAHOO search engines.

Usually seen wearing white suits during his later years, here he is in less-common black attire photographed by the Pach Brothers Photo Studio of New York, in 1906.

NEWSWEEK Magazine has just published a cover story on Twain in advance of a new and comprehensive biography.

If my Google and Yahoo image searches are any indication, I'll bet the above photo is not in the book. Perhaps the reason is that it might be one of two Mark Twain images in the Pach Brothers Portrait Photograph Collection, now jealously guarded by the New York Historical Society. I cannot find their Twain images posted on line, but know that they exist.

So, on a Flickr whim, I just copied it from an original glass "print" of the Pach Brothers photo in my possession, using a little LUMIX Digital Camera.

No doubt, as soon as this caption is read, a resourceful commenter will probably link us to another copy. ;-)

In the meantime (and until shown elsewhere as a free download on the Web), consider it a possible NEW DISCOVERY, and a PUBLIC DOMAIN photo gift to you fans of the unique and illustrious Mr. Samuel Langhorne Clemens --- MARK TWAIN.
