Need a mirror...

Tombstone of Eliza Washington, Maple Grove Cemetery, Georgetown, Scott County, Kentucky. Arguably one of the strangest tombstones I've ever seen. There is a 20-year-old Eliza Washington in the 1910 Scott County census; I'm not sure if this is the same person, as the birthdate on the stone is hard to interpret.

It really would be interesting to find out the story behind this. Bizarre is right!

Yes this is quite impressive. Now I know to look for more of these when I go out in the future. I am visit Oakwood Cemetery in Atlanta, next week. I understand from their website that they have a special section segregated for the African Americans. I'll see what I can dig up :)

There was one like this (in a slideshow) at the AGS Conference. What the suspect it was, illiterate carver and a stencil. He chalks the stencil on backwards. carves it out.

    Really really cool.

So now I'm curious - what is this grave marker made from? I'm thinking it might be cast concrete - but how would one easily make mold for such a marker?
  • Amy 8y

It appeared to be concrete. What I'm thinking is that he/she made a box, poured in the concrete, then set a stencil on top (like the potato stamps kids used to make) and let it harden. The problem being that didn't take into account the fact that the letters on the stencil needed to be backwards so the tombstone would read correctly.

    That is truly fascinating!

I'm late weighing in, but it is most unusual, as you've all noted. A special find.
