Paving Over Paradise
As a child this was my favourite sledding site, steep and narrow with a nice spot where you'd catch air. Just dangerous enough to be fun.
Now it's being torn down and filled with homes. I was hiking back there this summer and got kicked out for trespassing.
It's a shame -- nowadays kids go sledding on groomed courses with little conveyer belts so you don't have to hike up. Last winter I tried one of these 'sledding areas'. It's a poor substitute.
Groomed sledding is too artificial. You aren't out there amongst the trees. There's little exercise. There's no element of danger. There's no real 'edge'.
On my way out of the forest I pulled up a few of the construction flag markers. A futile F-U in the face of progress, and an homage to my feisty childhood.
