Live Euglena moving - 2 of 3

Image 2 of a three image sequence showing how Euglena move. Euglena move by contracting their cells into balls (much like an inchworm), which is why some of the individuals appear like balls while others are elongated. Euglena are both photosynthetic and organotrophic protists (they get energy both by consuming organic molecules and from light). This image is a cluster of live Euglena seen at 400x magnification.
