Hihi | by NZ Nature by Glenda Rees

On my third day on Tiritiri Matangi I decided to try out the far end of the island as I had had very little luck finding my target birds earlier in the more accessible parts. The tracks were very steep and slushy. I happened upon this male endemic Stitchbird (hihi) and it was unbanded (maybe last year's young) and it also was out in the open. I had just removed all my wet weather gear as the sky had brightened at last. However only about a couple of minutes later the sky darkened and the rain turned on again. I was quite pleased to get this one although a little over cooked maybe washing out the branches and the white tuft..
