Spotted Shag (Cormorant)

A Spotted Shag (Parekareka, Stictocarbo punctatus) endemic to New Zealand. They are nesting just now on the cliffsides. When they leave the nest they just dive off the cliff & fly almost straight down to about 2 meters above the sea when they level out & fly along the coast.

I'm not sure if I should have tried to get some more detail in the background - it's quite distracting due to unsharpness. Any suggestions?

(Am still having quite a lot of teething problems with the 7D, and this was a really grey day as well. These birds are very swift flyers so was hard to keep tracking them over varying background/lighting).
