    I actually saw Ruth St. Dennis perform when I was a young dancer. She was around eighty years old at the time and I guess I was expecting her to still look like this stunning picture of her. I also met her husband, Ted Shawn who founded an all male troupe of dancers....a first in the dance world. The two of them changed dance by looking beyond the traditional movements and culture. They were both beautiful people and I love looking at these wonderful photos from the Library of Congress.

    the points of her skirt are held back by wires, but it is her sense of artistry that creates a sense of motion.
