I am Here at Bay Street and Victory Boulevard, Staten Island
Installed on chain link fencing at the corner of Bay Street and Victory Boulevard, I am Here at Bay Street and Victory Boulevard, Staten Island, is a figurative, sculptural collage installed by artist Harumi Ori as a continuation of her ongoing series, “I am Here.” The sculptural intervention is presented in partnership with Staten Island MakerSpace. Fabricated using plastic, industrial orange construction mesh, the site-responsive artwork is Ori’s largest intervention to-date. Ori manipulates the mesh to create a snapshot of a moment in time, based off of photographs taken by Ori at the street crossing, which feature images of people, vehicles and objects along the streetscape. The layered folds of the mesh convincingly render the shape and volume of people and their surroundings, and as the pieces come together, the connections between individuals and groups, and the streets, buildings, and landscapes they pass through become evident. Orange mesh was selected because of its representation as a holy color in Ori’s native country, Japan.
